5 Questions With Associate Education Director Prima Gonzalez

Welcome to 5 Questions! We take a little time to sit down with the faculty and staff of The ESL School NYFA (ESN) and get to know them a bit, find out about their interests and what makes them tick. This is an ongoing series where we highlight one member of the team each month. Join us today for to get to know Prima Gonzalez, our associate education director at The ESL School at NYFA’s Los Angeles campus.

ESN: What do you enjoy most about your work at The ESL School at NYFA?

Prima Gonzalez: Being a part of the students’ process is my favorite part. Sometimes grammar or reading can be difficult. Helping them find a way to understand and integrate these skills is very rewarding. One of my favorite quotes is from Socrates: “I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think.” Also, the students at The ESL School at NYFA are very creative. They always have unique ways to approach activities and I am able to explore the language through film and the arts. The classroom is a very liberating place and it comes alive when the students make it their own.

ESN: What do you do in your spare time?

Prima Gonzalez: I like to take my dog Benjamin on hikes. I also paint, take photos, and enjoy riding my bike. This summer, I hope to do more camping.

ESN: If you could learn anything what would it be?

Prima Gonzalez: If I could learn anything, it would be to play the piano. I quit when I was nine years old. At that time, I preferred to play sports. I regret walking away because it is such a beautiful instrument. Maybe I’ll start again soon!

ESN: Who are your role models?

Prima Gonzalez: My mother is one of my role models. She has always been such a hard worker. She taught preschool children and now she teaches English and art to older people. I see how she has touched so many lives and brought them happiness. Her ability to leave a lasting impression on people is what makes her amazing.

ESN: Where has been your favorite place to travel? Where would you like to go next?

Prima Gonzalez: I have taught in many countries including Thailand, France, Morocco, and Costa Rica. My favorite place to teach has been India. I loved the food and the culture and the Taj Mahal was breathtaking! My favorite memory from India was sending a prayer boat down the sacred Ganges River.

Another favorite place of mine was Mount Kilimanjaro. This was more of a personal challenge. Climbing to the top of Africa’s highest mountain and seeing the sunrise is something I will never forget. Next, I would like to visit China or Korea. I have studied a little Chinese because I think the language is very beautiful. These are two cultures I am intrigued by.
