Star Wars Day

May the Fourth be with you! The ESL School at NYFA had fun with Star Wars Day on May 4, also known as “Star Wars” day. Each campus celebrated this special holiday in their own unique way, coming up with creative and educational activities to commemorate the day.

The San Jose Campus had a “Star Wars” costume contest where they made their own costumes from up-cycled/recycled items. After the contest, they watched “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.” Following the film, the students practiced their conversational skills by discussing the movie.

In Los Angeles, Instructor Kendall Nelson worked with level four students discussing the iconic Yoda quote “Do or do not, there is no try.” The students spoke about experiences in their own lives where they achieved something in spite of being afraid or other challenging circumstances. Students shared achievements such as living alone in a new country, singing in a school competition, and applying to The New York Film Academy.

Instructor Kerry Chow had her students take a different approach. Her students corrected Yoda’s grammar!  From Yoda’s “Looking? Found someone you have, eh?” to a corrected  “Have you found someone that you are looking for?”, the students demonstrated their mastery of proper English grammar. We think Yoda would be proud of all of them.

Prima Gonzalez talked to her students about Luke Skywalker’s heroic journey and how the students could apply the concept of a heroic journey to their own lives. There was a lively discussion, and level five student Mia Xuan Gao realized that her heroic journey was chasing her dream: to make films.  In her level three class, Ms. Gonzalez shared a recent CNN article about “Star Wars” moisture farming becoming a reality. This connected to the class theme of a “thirsty world” as well as “Star Wars” Day. After the lesson, student Yukibumi Josha said, “Filmmakers are very important in helping us realize the future.”
