• New York Film Academy (NYFA) ESN-NYC Visits The Museum of the Moving Image

The Museum of the Moving Image was once a famous film studio for silent films. Today, it is one of the only film museums of its kind, located in Queens, New York. The museum offers an interesting look at film and television history through old, archive footage and antique equipment. The museum also includes cutting-edge exhibitions on technology.

    Jim Henson’s storyboarding

In July, the ESN-NYC students went to The Museum of The Moving Image. There, they visited an exhibition entitled The New Genres: Video in the Internet Age which showed clips from popular YouTube video personalities.  Students also got a chance to learn hands-on techniques with interactive exhibitions.

One student, Michiru explained, “They showed us a lot of small models and special effects make-up, which was very helpful.” The Museum of the Moving Image is a great way to see the history of film unfold before your eyes.

Another student, Chian, said, “I saw a lot of real things such as scripts and props so I could learn about film history, so it was very interesting for me. I want to go back again!”

  • New York Film Academy (NYFA) ESN-LA Goes to the Hollywood Bowl

In the heart of LA lies the Hollywood Bowl, arguably one of the most famous music venues in the United States. It’s prominence stems from its long history of iconic performances, from American musicians like Frank Sinatra to the world-famous The Beatles. Our students got the chance to explore the inside, learn about the architectural design of the building, and — most importantly — be immersed in its colorful history.

  • The ESL School at NYFA Celebrates “Be Kind to Humankind” Week

“What can I do to make the world a better place?”

This is a question we might ask ourselves from time to time. Most people think we need to do big things to have an impact on the world around us. However, this isn’t always true. Small actions can have the power to change someone’s life.

Did you know that there is a special week called Be Kind to Humankind Week? ESN-LA and NYC celebrated by doing a few thoughtful activities.

ESN-LA created garlands of birds and wrote one kind thing they could do each day. These are now hung up in the ESN office as a reminder of the small actions we can take each day. Here are a few of their suggestions:

“Spend more time communicating with friends rather than just focusing on your phone.”

“Hold the door open for people who are behind you.”

    “Keep smiling.”

We also focused on the importance of being kind to ourselves. Kathia, a NYFA-LA counselor, guided the students through meditation exercises. Being a student can be stressful, so it’s very important that we manage our anxiety.

In addition, ESN students created PSAs (public service announcements), which are produced to educate and raise awareness about social issues. The students showed their creativity by taking the topic of kindness and interpreting it in many ways. All of the ESN students gathered in a screening room to enjoy some pizza and popcorn while watching the beautiful messages of the PSAs.

It is easy to see that these students are in the right place to develop their filmmaking skills. They had to plan their scripts, storyboards, and edit the final product. We are so proud to be part of helping these students reach their goals!

FUN FACT: The Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles is the home of the LA Philharmonic when they aren’t playing at their summer home, the Hollywood Bowl. When the Walt Disney Concert Hall was built, the steel walls reflected a lot of sunlight. As a result, the nearby sidewalks were a scorching 140 degrees Fahrenheit!
